Driving test pass rates by test centre

Where you take your driving test is one of the biggest things nobody tells you about learning to drive. Among centres running at least 500 tests a year, the best pass around 67% of candidates. The worst pass around 33%. Every DVSA practical test centre in Great Britain is on this page, ranked for the 2024-25 financial year. Look up your local centre, or see the extremes in our write-ups on the hardest and easiest driving test centres in Britain.

What the data shows

  • The gap between Britain's highest and lowest pass rates runs to over 55 percentage points. Even once you strip out the tiny rural centres and look only at sites running at least 500 tests a year, the gap is still over 33 points. Where you sit your test is one of the biggest and least-discussed factors in whether you pass first time.
  • The geographic pattern is real, consistent, and not an artefact of small samples. Urban centres in the West Midlands, London, and Scotland's central belt cluster at the lower end of the table. Rural centres in Wales, the Scottish Highlands, and along the south coast generally sit higher. The volume effect is part of it, but the pattern holds even among the busier centres.
  • Britain's national pass rate for 2024-25 was 48.6%, up from 47.8% the year before.
  • The dataset covers 315 test centres, between them running 1,829,061 practical tests in the year. Individual centres range from a few dozen tests to more than twenty thousand.

How Britain's regions compare

DVSA publishes pass rates at test-centre level, not by region. We group every centre into its UK statistical region (ITL1) using its postcode area, then weight the regional pass rate by tests conducted so busy urban centres and quiet rural ones each carry their real share. Regions are ordered from hardest to easiest.

West Midlands, Scotland, and North East are the three hardest regions in Britain for passing a driving test. West Midlands sits at the bottom at 44%, while Wales tops the table at 54%. The national average hides real variation between regions, before you even get to the differences between individual centres inside them.

Regional pass rates are weighted by tests conducted (total passes divided by total tests in the region), matching the formula used for the national figure. Highest and lowest centre picks exclude sites running fewer than 500 tests in the year.

Frequently asked questions

Where does this data come from, and how up to date is it?

Every number on this page comes from DVSA monthly statistics for practical car driving tests. We are showing the 2024-25 financial year (April 2024 to March 2025), which is the most recent complete dataset DVSA has published. The full source is linked in the methodology at the bottom of the page.

Why do pass rates vary so much between test centres?

DVSA is clear that every examiner marks to the same standard wherever they work, so the variation you see between centres comes almost entirely from the test routes themselves. A 40-minute drive through central London puts a candidate in front of a completely different set of hazards than the same 40 minutes through the Scottish Highlands, and the shape of that route is what shows up in the pass rate. For a detailed breakdown of what specifically makes urban centres harder, our write-up on the worst places to do your driving test walks through the main factors.

Can I choose which test centre to take my driving test at?

Yes. When you book a practical test through the DVSA, you can pick any centre in the country with available slots, not just the one closest to you. The trade-off is that travelling further for a test means sitting it on unfamiliar roads, which is its own risk. Most learners do better on routes they already know.

Are rural test centres actually easier to pass at?

The data shows rural centres do tend to have higher pass rates, but the very smallest ones run only a handful of tests a year, so their headline percentages can swing wildly on tiny samples. Among centres running at least 500 tests a year the pattern is softer, but it is still real: rural routes tend to have less traffic and fewer complex junctions, which gives learners fewer chances to pick up faults. For a full ranked list, see our write-up on the easiest driving test centres in Britain.

How is the pass rate calculated?

For each centre, we take the total number of practical tests conducted in the financial year and divide by the number of passes, both taken straight from DVSA's monthly counts. We do not weight, smooth, or adjust the numbers in any way. The rate you see matches the figure DVSA would publish for that centre.

Why isn't Northern Ireland included?

DVSA only publishes statistics for Great Britain: England, Scotland, and Wales. Practical driving tests in Northern Ireland are administered by a separate body, the Driver and Vehicle Agency (DVA), and its data is published on a different schedule and is not part of this dataset.

Methodology

All figures on this page are derived from official Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) statistics covering every GB practical car driving test centre. Data reflects the 2024-25 financial year (April to March).

Overall pass rates per centre are calculated by summing monthly conducted tests and passes, then dividing passes by tests. Gender and transmission splits use the same method against the relevant subset of tests. Manual pass rates are derived as the residual of overall minus automatic, matching DVSA methodology.

League tables exclude centres with fewer than 500 tests in the reporting period to avoid small-sample noise. Northern Ireland is not included: DVSA publishes GB-only statistics, with NI tests managed by DVA.

Regional groupings are Drivepal analysis. DVSA publishes data at test centre level, not by region, so we assign each centre to its UK statistical region (ITL1) from its postcode area. Regional pass rates are weighted by tests conducted, matching the formula used for the national figure.
